The flow has started. It’s a trickle, but before long, it will deepen. and the depth over rocks and debris will expand. This is how I think of my writing. Grateful I was able to log in with other writers for three days this week, I’ve made a little progress on the holiday story. While driving, which seems to be my biggest piece of downtime, I thought about how the title will fit into the story. I also considered doing more research on the location and a particular detail at the beginning of the story.
I completed a beta read for a fellow writer. I miss her writing. It’s part horror and part literary. She doesn’t include many details, but some of her phrases and word choices make up for it. I’m meeting with her on Sunday to offer my feedback. She’s read plenty of my stories. It’s a pleasant reciprocity that I don’t take for granted.
A couple of other projects are sitting on the corner of my desk. I’ve thought about which story to write next in the short story illustrated collection. The third novel in a series also takes up space there. A few admin tasks could be done, but I prefer to wade into fiction. It’s been a long time since I started and finished a fiction project without weeks and months of interruption. I looked forward to time when I had hours to dedicate to writing. I’m not wasting it on tasks that aren’t important at the moment.
I always have a bit of doubt when I start a project. Will I remember how to make sentences? Will the story come to me as the words are penned on the page? Will I trust the process? So far, the trickle of words is satisfying. Perhaps by next week, with my writing muscles warmed up, the characters will show me their story. What are you looking forward to returning to?
