It’s kind of like making mashed potatoes. Once the potatoes are cooked, recipes ask for a little bit of butter, then a little bit of milk to make the consistency desired. I decided to make twice-baked potatoes for my Gratitude Day dinner. Since I’m vegan, I used vegan butter and oat milk. I also added onions, bell peppers, garlic powder, and cumin. I think with twice-baked potatoes, the combinations are almost endless. What doesn’t go well with mashed potatoes?
My writing lately has been like making mashed potatoes. I write a little bit one day, a little more the next. I’ve been working on a story for an anthology with three other writers. I finally finished the first part. I’ve been working on the second part. Even though the word count is less, and I know about how many pages I need to handwrite to reach that word count, time has sped by faster than a bullet train. I won’t have it ready for our meeting tomorrow.
And that, too, is like mashed potatoes. When I first started writing, life didn’t interfere. Or I seemed to find work arounds. There was a time when I vowed to “write despite” whatever life event was happening. When I couldn’t, I felt that not only had I let myself down, but I wasn’t kind to myself or the excuses I had for not sticking to my deadline. Now, with lots of mindset work and 16 years as an author, I still set deadlines, and when I don’t meet them, I don’t make excuses, and I don’t make myself feel horrible about it. I acknowledge where I’m at, and I add a little bit of writing to the project at a time. What is something you do that takes a little bit at a time to finish?
