We’ve all had times where one or more parts of life aren’t going how we hoped or planned. If we pay attention, it makes the days when things turn out positively a time to be grateful. A yoga teacher told me, “Nothing is revealed, except in contrast.” We only know what light is because we’ve seen the dark. We know heat because we’ve felt the cold. We appreciate honesty because we’ve heard lies. And if we’re mindful, we notice the hard and the easy because we’ve experienced both.
With my mind set change regarding my writing career, I find the words come easier than at certain times over the last 17 years. My process is the same, and there’s comfort in the familiar. But I don’t feel the drag or the push to critique every word during this first draft phase. Random thoughts of marketing or launch emails or sales promos are dormant. This leaves the door open for me to get words onto the page. I’ve found more enjoyment in writing since this change. I have a loose deadline for The Lost Gift, last year’s holiday novella. I feel no dread in missing that deadline or cramming in as many published titles as possible this calendar year.
When the words come easy and the pen flows uninhibited across the page, I’m grateful. I’ve made it through tough times, so I revel in the simple, the joy, the ease of the current flow. Perhaps with this mind shift, I can stretch the easy, feel more gratitude, and have the resilience and knowledge to ride out the complicated times. What is something you have gratitude for?
