Counting today, I finally have a writing streak longer than 3 days! Yay! Because I hand write my first drafts, I’m unsure of my word count. I already know I’ll need to do some rewriting during the editing phase. Focusing on the relationship between the main characters and the reason for the plane crash had me forgetting the “holiday” part of this novella. It’s set in winter, there’s a snow storm, a snow mobile, etc. so adding holiday details will be easy enough. One character has mentioned the survival of another character as a Christmas miracle.
Since my mind set shift, I view deadlines as suggestions. However, because this shift is new, I’m not sure if I can place it in the “habit” column. It could be that I’ll tire of the lack of pressure to hurry up and publish. But for now, I’m enjoying the writing, the flow of words, and the turning of the pages in my spiral notebook.
As time rolls on, I find myself checking in with how I fill my days. Am I still content with my routines? Since moving Holly to another stall at the ranch, I’ve had to adjust what I do. But new routines are good. It keeps one from a rut and from mindlessly doing things. Am I still getting something from the write-ins with other authors? During our 5-15 min. breaks after an hour of writing, the talk is rarely about writing or publishing. It’s like a commercial during a TV show. I find it easy to jump out and back in to my story. And my habit of writing makes my days feel more complete. What habits are your favorites?
