I’ve read this phrase in novels that include characters who are military or former military. It means, I think, to be aware, to pay attention. I’ve had things this week that have caught my attention. I’ve had some momentum, finally, and have made progress on the projects that aren’t related to my fiction writing. It’s a practice in accepting what is, tucking away any semblance of perfectionism, and letting things go.
That is opposite of the momentum I thought we had with the anthology. Waiting on the beta reader. Waiting on the one in charge of ordering the cover. Waiting on answers from participants about formatting concerns and author copies to order. Maybe they will surprise me, and we can get back that momentum to publish this book by the end of next month.
My attention has swiveled from creative projects to different things at the ranch to my health. I remind myself to focus on what I can control and not be swallowed whole by world crises. To focus my attention on one or two things instead of being aware of everything allows me to make space to function. That space is where I can create when art is an act of truth and an act of rebellion.
