Sometimes the universe makes a choice obvious. Even when I’m not looking in that direction or when I have plans to do something else. Even if I think it’s going to be really hard, I brace myself and plow forward. This is what I’ve done the past couple of weeks. I made a decision and followed through on the steps. And then, nothing.
Several times this week I’ve laughed out loud. I was asked to open my schedule for a client. The client booked a lot of hours, then the next day decided they weren’t interested and canceled. I thought I would have another client, then was told that he’s working with someone else, and the communication was lost in the shuffle. After checking off the boxes for another employer, I realized they wanted my video interview to train their AI. Signing up for a simple job, I was kicked out for not meeting the qualifications of a “typical American”. So many examples that tested my sense of humor. And these situations made another option clear.
In between chunks of time spent on websites where I was ready to plant myself in a place I didn’t think would work long term, I wrote some words for book 3 in the Waldman Investigations series. Changing the first couple of pages opened up the story. It also seems to have turned on/up the movie screen in my head. Not only am I thinking about this story but about the other dozen spiral notebooks I have on my writing desk, most of which are continuations of other open series.
I tried sticking with nonfiction the first few months of this year. That was harder than putting roots down into solid rock. I shifted my focus to fiction, and everything became easier. I took the necessary steps to continue working with clients, but not much has come from my efforts. I’m paying attention to what is easy. I’ll make good use of this time by choosing the obvious option: playing with stories.
