There was room for only so many thoughts. When I reached my capacity, my mind refused to take a different track. That’s my explanation for missing last week’s blog post.
I know that when circumstances in my life get a bit wonky, when I lose touch with the few pieces I have control over, I can’t create. For years, I brow beat myself into “write despite.” When I couldn’t, there was more self-criticism. It took a while, but I figured out that way of being wasn’t doing me any good. Some artists can make art regardless of what is happening around them or what they are feeling. For some, this drives them to create. For me, I need time to process.
Having gathered some information—after all, knowledge is power—and letting my feelings and thoughts come, and giving them room, and even voicing some of them, I felt I was in a place to move forward. Since I was in the middle of a journal project, it helped to dump my thoughts and feelings onto the page. Getting stuff out of my head allowed room for thoughts of moving forward.
I’ve been working on edits of the audiobook my narrator finished. I hope to complete that this week. Of the five projects that have been on hold for 2 weeks now, I will return first to the anthology. It’s tough to ignore deadlines when others are counting on you. I have 3/4 of the first story done. I need to finish it and get the second part of this story written and sent to the other writers in the anthology a few days before we meet at the end of the month. The other projects will have to wait.
Being reminded last week of what I have control over, how I can rearrange my priorities, the importance of giving myself space to dump my thoughts and feelings so I have room to move forward was important. Knowing this now will help me in the future. What do you do to get yourself moving forward?
