Every book project has a life of its own. The Found Gift has its own “coming into being” story. No, this photo isn’t the cover, but it reminds me of the different layers, colors, and depths that each project has. I wrote the first draft, then added 11,000 words in a rewrite. I sent it off to the beta reader. Though I got it back last week, I’ve yet to start on the edits. The book cover has gone through a revision. Though I’m not in love with the cover, it depicts the genre, the setting, and fits in with the other Gift series books. At least I have the description and all the front and back matter ready to go.

I’m trying something new with this book. Two projects ago, I did my first preorder with online retailers. It was pretty easy. I was pleased with the results. I launched my last book without a preorder. The response was crickets. This time, I’m trying a preorder from my website. My newsletter subscribers have first crack at ordering the book. Fingers crossed, I have all the links set up correctly.

Not one to sit idle, in between meeting with clients for the day job, I’m writing flash fiction pieces and editing short stories for MV2. When that goes live, probably next month, I’ll include a link here. As my available time to write shrinks (think of the adage, “Make hay while the sun shines.”), I see myself clearing the decks of these current projects, then buckling down on book 3 in the Waldman Investigations series. At least, that’s the plan at the moment.

The Found Gift started as a short story. The first draft came differently than my stories usually do. I’m still adjusting to having a new cover designer. And I’m checking out other launch methods. Different layers, colors, and depths… but I’m still excited to publish this story. Do all your projects come about the same way, or does each one have a unique journey?
