I’ve been thinking about my writing process this week. After working on my mind set the last couple of years, I’ve come to a place where I enjoy my creative process again. I intend to write each day. When I do, whether it’s a page or several, I feel good about getting some words down. I’m not pressured to meet a deadline. I find writing entertaining, and it boosts my mood to know I’ve made progress on a project.
The other side of that is when I don’t get words down. I’m aware of procrastination and shifting priorities. Creating is easier, and my days are more pleasurable, whether or not I write, if I give myself forgiveness for not meeting my intention. It hasn’t always been this way, so I’m grateful that I’ve arrived at this place.
While I’m still working on The Lost Gift, a holiday novella, I appreciate my imagination and the movie screen in my head. I plan to lengthen my writing streaks (days in a row when I work on this project), but haven’t gotten past 3. In the past, I might have beat myself up for not making writing the number one priority in my life. Over the 17 years of my writing career, I’ve learned more about myself and my process. Writing the first draft is the most creative, the most fun, takes the longest, and is the most freeing. The editing, front and back matter, formatting, cover, and publishing are more tedious, but also hold their own bits of excitement. What process do you enjoy?
