I’m not one who feels the need to be in the know, the first to try something, jump on a trend, or be a trailblazer. Unless that trailblazing means not doing what many others claim to be the next biggest and best. My FOMO meter barely moves from zero. In this age of so much that is digital, where many scramble to add and use AI, I’m standing still.
I’m an analog girl at heart. All of my classroom materials are made from paper and require students to interact with their peers and the teacher. The free artwork on my website related to my fiction books can be printed. No wallpaper or background images. I’m not attached to my smart phone. The only notifications I have are for texts and calls. I observe a digital sundown, and I do several things in the morning before looking at the weather app on my phone. I find it interesting that the 20-something horsewomen at the ranch can ride and scroll on their phones at the same time. Me? I’m all about being with Holly and looking/listening for snakes if we’re on the trail.
I’ve received emails from the platforms where I have my books listed. Because they’re inundated with books written by AI they’re changing the rules. As it usually happens, those of us who don’t use AI are affected by the changes. A fee on this platform and a limited number of books published. A report of why print prices must increase. And several proud announcements of what an AI feature on other platforms can do for authors.
I’m still hand writing my drafts. I request “no AI” for my book covers. I interact with my readers so they know I’m human. I’ve chosen to continue with the writing process that has worked best for me, and I’m fine with that not including AI for ideas, research, editing, copy, or graphics. Some may believe I’ll be left behind as the tech world, and its influence on the publishing industry, creates a bit of chaos. It’s not that I’m waiting for the dust to settle or the right guru to follow so I understand the tech and the changes that happen at lightning speed. I’m enjoying the feel of pen on paper, my own imagination, and the flowers that make me smile.
