Yesterday, I finished a 5-week course with someone known in the industry due to her presence on a podcast for 3 years and her work as a coach. When I received the fourth or fifth email advertising her course, I decided to give it a try. It wasn’t based on craft or marketing or even the author journey. Instead, it focused on a way to view personality and how that may effect a writing career. I wondered how much could be included in 5 weeks, as that’s a lot to cover. I learned some things by reading, and I also had a few insights during the Q&A days.
I learned a bit more about myself and what steers me to do certain behaviors. When looking at how this might effect my author career, there are a couple of solid thoughts for me to contemplate. I wish the course was more directed toward the author journey, like how certain personalities may view marketing, editing, and even the stories they prefer to tell.
I found myself wishing for one hot second that this would be an answer to help me gain clarity on where I’ve been the past 18 years and how I might move forward. I know there is no silver bullet for anything. Makes we wonder why many of us keep searching for it. I felt that the answers to my questions weren’t very thorough. Then I realized, despite the fee I paid, that this was an introduction to what the presenter hoped would lead to 1:1 coaching. I’ll dig through my notes and highlight what I find most useful.
One thing this course has done is to present me with the opportunity to look where I’ve been, what I’ve done, the people I’ve known, and what I’ve achieved. This naturally has led me to think of how I can gain more clarity on where I’m going and what I’m willing to do along the way.
Today, I thought of a writer’s journey like a cafeteria. My projects are many and my process is what I like. I can pick what I want to do for marketing. I have options for opportunities to meet other writers. I know where to go to learn what I feel can support me as I move forward. I may not have come away from the course with all that I hoped I would, but it has opened the door for me to gain clarity. With that, momentum can flow unimpeded.
